Convertible Seats

  • Convertible Car Seats can be used either forward or rear-facing by making simple adjustments. They can be used longer than infant seats, but are bulkier, less portable, and may not fit small infants as well. All models include a tether for forward-facing installation; some seats may also be tethered rear-facing, as noted. Never tether a rear-facing seat unless specifically allowed by the manufacturer.  All seats have a snap-together style harness clip, unless otherwise noted.

Convertible seats typically have higher rear-facing height and weight limits than infant seats, allowing longer rear-facing use. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children are safest when riding rear-facing, so this use is recommended as long as the infant meets the height and weight guidelines. At minimum, children must ride rear-facing until at least one year and 20 lbs.

Two harness types to choose from:

  • 5-Point Harness—five anchor points: two at the shoulders, two at the hips, and one at the crotch. No shield.
  • Tray-Shield or Overhead-Shield—padded, tray-like shield that swings down around the child on hinged arms. Some models are adjustable.

(NOTE: If selecting a convertible seat for a newborn baby, choose one with a 5-point
harness, not a shield. Shields do not fit newborn babies properly.)
