NHTSA Announcement

NHTSA is pleased to announce that the National SAFE KIDS Campaign will serve as the new certifying body for the National Standardized Child Passenger Safety Training Program (NSCPS Training Program), effective January 1, 2004. In assuming this role SAFE KIDS recognizes the important contribution the NSCPS Training program makes to child passenger safety nationwide and the need to maintain the highest standards for certification. We are most encouraged by the fresh approach SAFE KIDS brings to this undertaking. Over the next several months, we will keep everyone informed of their plans to improve the certification program through the use of computer technology and enhanced communications. Regular updates concerning these changes will be posted on the CPS Board Web site at www.cpsboard.org and additional updates, including e-mails and postcards, will be distributed periodically. NHTSA also wishes to commend AAA for its leadership in developing the NSCPS certification process from its inception and for serving as the certifying body since 1998. AAA's continued commitment to child passenger safety through its "Seated, Safe & Secure" campaign and position on the National CPS Board will help ensure this important safety initiative remains highly visible and effective. As SAFE KIDS works with AAA to ensure a seamless transition, they will be looking to all of our partners in child passenger safety for new ideas on refining the certification process.
